The City of Abbotsford announced in May 2012 its intention to dispose of what looks to be approximately 400 acres of city-owned land on Sumas Mountain to Metro Vancouver. These parcels are on the south and west edges of the mountain. A copy of the city's notice of disposition is here.
Terms of the deal have not been released in full. The notice says that it's not actually a sale but a 99 year lease, where Metro Vancouver pays the city of Abbotsford one dollar and agrees to operate it as a park.
It has been reported that the city has turned over its land to Metro Vancouver as part of a larger plan to turn over controls to Metro Vancouver to operate Sumas Mountain park, with these additional city-owned lands to be included in the operations.
This is a significant disposition, and one which could affect the interests of dozens of landowners up here, but to our knowledge none of the residents of Sumas Mountain were consulted, including those whose properties border on the park and the city-owned lands.
